The Good Shepherd

May 27, 2007 at 09:52 PM

Meh. The Good Shepherd was too long and slow and there wasn't really anything great about it. A thriller/drama without many thrills or much drama. If you've got 3 hours to kill and it's on TV it's worth a watch, but I'm not sure I can recommend paying money to see it.

Good movie with an anticlimactic ending. Probably a little overrated too which meant I went into the film with too high expectations and ended up disappointed. Supposedly a great technical film and some amazing camera work and direction, but that doesn't mean too much to me when I was bored for long stretches during the movie. I've got to stop reading reviews or talking to co-workers about movies before I see them.

Sugar Bowl - Notre Dame vs LSU

January 03, 2007 at 09:51 PM

Notre Dame is hanging in longer than I thought they would but it seems like LSU is starting to pull away again. I'm not sure about these BCS games being on Fox, Terry Bradshaw is doing an okay job in the booth but it's still kind of awkward. Did the games start so late last year? It was 10pm before the second half even started. Way too late for kids to stay up and watch and learn to love college football.

Good movie but I'd almost rather watch a well produced documentary on the actual abduction of the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games. The first scenes in Munich were the most interesting of the movie, but since they weren't the real focus of the film it moved on pretty quickly.

Eric Bana and his crew are a little bumbling at the beginning of thier mission and for me was too light-hearted for the movie.

I honestly think Steve Martin made this pointless, boring movie so he could make out with a woman 35 years his younger. Mirabelle (Claire Danes) sleeps with people early and often and for no reason for the first 90 minutes of the movie, then the last ten is actually halfway decent. People need to stop giving Jason Schwartzman roles, he creeps me out.

Maybe it's just because it got so many bad reviews, but I thought it was great. Entertaining but far less exciting/enthraling than the book but that's always the case. I really have no idea what most reviewers were expecting, but I thought it did a fair job recreating Dan Brown's religous mystery. There were definitely a couple of bad moments, but certainly no out of place laughter and people in the theater actually applauded when it was over.

Most of the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are pretty indicative of the problem with movie critics. You've got one complaining the albino monk (Silas) "isn't any fun" and another that it's too long. Useless and hypercritical as usual.

Really worth seeing whether you read the book or not. Just enjoy the damn thing.

Really awful movie. It had a few funny moments, but mainly it was an unclever and predictable movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is so average. Does anyone other than women find her particularly attractive?

I hate movies where it takes people 40 seconds to fall in love, the entire second half of the movie is based on completely stupid events that wouldn't happen in a million years. Not worth renting or owning, maybe in four years when it comes to TBS.

Big 12 Championship

December 03, 2005 at 02:01 PM

The Texas Longhorns just won the Big 12 championship. They’re going to Pasadena to play in the Rose Bowl for a national title. I just can’t seem to wrap my brain around that. They had a chance to do something special this season and with today’s resounding victory they’ve done that. After a dissapointing performance in last week’s win, they played essentially perfect football today on both sides of the ball. The line opened more holes in the running game and gave Vince Young plenty of time to throw the football. I can’t remember a single dropped pass and there were several great catches. Jamaal Charles looked great. After giving up some yards on the first two drives the defense came up with huge plays to end both of them. They then settled in nicely and dominated the Buffalo offense.

Great performances all around and one of the most important wins for the program in recent memory. Bring on Southern Cal!

Kansas vs. Texas

November 12, 2005 at 05:55 PM

Horns can’t really do anymore than they have the last two weeks. Two dominating performances over two much improved Big 12 opponents, both Baylor and Kansas have very solid defenses and the Texas offense went through them like they weren’t even there. Completely dominant and very balanced. We ran and passed at will. The defense has done their job as well. Today the Kansas offense was completely shut down during the first half, not only kept off the scoreboard but had only a single first down in the half. Texas is playing like the best all around team in the country right now.

By the way, Alabama just lost in overtime to LSU and Texas and USC are now the only two undefeated teams. No controversy this year. Finally, if the Longhorns win their next two games they’ll be in Pasadena in January.

Texas Tech at Texas

October 22, 2005 at 06:24 PM

I have a feeling USC will get a lot more credit for beating #9 Notre Dame by 4 than we will for beating #10 (and #7 in the BCS) Texas Tech by 35. A completely dominating performance by both sides of the ball today and once again I don’t think we played near our best football game. Vince Young finished the game only 12 of 22, but had 239 yards and two touchdowns and made the plays he needed to win the game. Jamaal Charles looked to be about 75% and was clearly limited both by his ankle and the coaches, so Selvin Young stepped up and had a great game. He had 76 yards on the ground and added two good TD runs and just as importantly didn’t put the ball on the ground once. The defense played solid all game long, holding Texas Tech well below their season averages despite the fact that our quick strike offense gave them the ball often. Sure tackling and excellent play by the secondary made it a long game for Mike Leach’s boys.

Colorado at Texas

October 15, 2005 at 06:01 PM

Vince Young played about as good a game as a quarterback can today. The Rose Bowl is his signature game but he did all of that on his own and most of it with his legs, today he showed everyone that he’s a complete football player. He ran and threw the ball effortlessly today and played a near flawless game. His final stats: 25 of 29 for 338 yards and 2 touchdowns and add 59 yards and 3 more TD’s on the ground. Just as importantly, his receivers showed up today as well. David Thomas had 5 catches and converted several important third downs and Limas Sweed had 7 catches, 88 yards, and 2 touchdowns. I don’t remember a single dropped ball and there were probably 5 fantastic catches. If we had a healthy Jamaal Charles or if we had kept putting the ball in the air in the second half we could have won by 40. A very complete football game by the Horns.

Texas at Missouri

October 01, 2005 at 11:59 AM

Sloppy and ugly for the first quarter or so. Texas was plagued by penalties and other mistakes throughout the game, especially early on. Once the offense got rolling and the defense settled down it was clear they were the better team. Vince Young played well and made the huge plays when he had to. His scramble on 3rd and 30 was a game changing play. Aside from the ball that was poorly thrown and tipped at the line of scrimmage that resulted in an interception, he made every throw he had to make. He threw for 2 TD’s and had another one (or two) that the refs claimed were incomplete that sure looked like touchdowns to me.

Jamaal Charles is officially the real deal and it’s exciting to finally see Ramonce Taylor getting his hands on the ball again.

Aggies suck

September 22, 2005 at 09:10 PM

The Aggies are only up by 6 and the half is almost over. Bobcats are driving too and will take the lead if they score. Aggies have gotten several turnovers and big plays but have only put 20 on the scoreboard. Plus they can't stop the mighty Texas State offense either. I predict Texas A&M wins 45 to 31.

I know like at least 5 people on the Texas State roster and a member of the coaching staff. A guy I played with is dominating the formidable Aggy defensive line.

By the way, the Aggy radio announcers (who are doing the TV for this game) are terrible and have no idea what's going on half the time.

Great comedy with some actual substance on FX Thursdays at 9 Central. And swearing too! Definitely going onto my TiVo Season Pass list so I don't miss any upcoming episodes. I'll be sure to post more after I see a few more episodes so I can tell you whether or not you should be watching it too.

Apparently critics found it offensive, I found it hilarious.

Almost great, but ultimately falls short.

The original trailer didn't really interest me, but after hearing rave reviews we went in with high expectations. Somewhere in the middle was probably about right. Really funny movie without any outrageously funny parts. Definitely go see it if you liked Old School or other Vince Vaughn/Will Ferrell movies.

On a sidenote, the freaking archenemy's name is Sack. I thought it was Zach for a while, then realized it was freaking SACK.

Great movie that comes really close to being a fantastic one. Maybe I'm just a sap but I was hoping for a little different ending.

Great performances by everyone in the cast. Dennis Quaid is great, Scarlett Johansson is beautiful and wonderful, and Topher Grace is funny and vulnerable. Topher Grace, despite going by the name of Topher, is actually a surprisingly good actor and has transition out of his The 70's Show role pretty easily.

Kind of mixed emotions over what's going to happen to CJ Miles. He's a UT commit who claims he will attend Texas if he's undrafted or drafted in the second round. I honestly think coming to school for a year or two would be best for him, but he's made his decision and I hope things work out for the kid.

About 53 stand-up comedians

April 24, 2005 at 09:52 PM
Comic Strip Live

Christina and I went to Comic Strip Live while we were in NYC and had a blast. Some of the comics were hilarious, some were good, and a couple were average at best, but all in all it was a great evening of entertainment. The only person I recognized was Judah Friedlander from Best Week Ever on VH1. He was decent. There were almost too many comedians, we were burned out and ready to go by the end.

Worst part? The audience was pretty small, around twenty people or so, so a couple of the crappier comics thought they'd try to blame their unfunniness on the audience. Over and over again. Say something funny and we'll laugh. And stop asking us where we're from, the eight comics that came on before you already did that bit.

The tickets were only $20, but there was a two drink minimum that ended up costing us sixty bucks or so. The show started at 8:30 and we finally left at midnight and they were still going, so you get a good amount of fun for your dollar.

If anybody is headed that way or lives in NYC and is interested in going, comment and I'll mail you a ticket that'll admit two now through the end of the summer or so.

Amazing.

Rating: 5/5

Read another review!

I still have no urge to see any Broadway musicals, but I can definitely understand why Broadway plays are so reknowned. It was entertaining throughout and very well-acted. I'd never seen the movie, so the story was completely new to me. I'll try to rent it soon.

Scene from Twelve Angry Men

A couple of relatively well-known actors were in the play. John Pankow from Mad About You and James Rebhorn from Meet the Parents among other things were both really good, but the entire cast was at least their equal. Pankow definitely seemed to linger a little longer than everyone else during the curtain call.

In the most obvious statement ever, everyone needs to see a show on Broadway at least once in their lives.

Much better movie than the reviews are giving it credit for, but still pretty average. I'm guessing the biggest problem is that without all the overblown legends, the story is a little boring. Amazon's review calls the battle of the Alamo a bloody 13-day siege, when really it was 12 days of standing around hoping more people would show up followed by a couple of hours of fighting.

Movie was decent enough that anyone interested in the Alamo should see it. If you're not a fan of any of the actors or the story, then it's probably a movie you can skip.

So I finally got TiVoToGo last week and the first thing I did was transfer all four hours of the Rose Bowl. The dang thing is 11GB so transferring over 802.11b took like 6+ hours. Downloaded the Sonic MyDVD Tivo Trial Edition, took out the commercials, and burnt the sucker.

I'm going to watch it over and over again just to piss off Christina.

Nowhere near as funny as the first one, but still good.

For some reason I can't stand when people in movies/on TV get embarrassed. It's painful for me to watch, I have to look away. Unfortunately, like 80% of Meet the Fockers was Greg being embarrassed for no reason by his parents.

Wait for it to come out on video.

I swear I finished the first one, but maybe not. I could've sworn Professor Snape turned out to be the bad guy, but he was still around.

Anyways, good movie. I still don't understand the fanaticism for it by people over the age of twelve, but it's good quality entertainment. Harry is already starting to get a little too old for the role, if they plan on doing a fifth movie I wonder if it'll spin off from the original character. I've got no urge to see a middle-aged wizard.

Wimbledon was actually a movie I wanted to see in theaters, but I decided it was probably going to be a piece of crap. I love Kirsten Dunst, and although he hasn't been in much I think Paul Bettany is pretty damn funny, but it's about tennis so it's all kind of a wash.

Turns out the movie was pretty good, and an actually acceptable sports movie. Outcome is very predictable, but it's still entertaining. And of course, how can you go wrong with Kirsten Dunst in a tennis skirt for 90% of the movie.

First and foremost his girlfriend needs to go. The guy is obviously a pretty liberal dude, but you could tell even he was tired of listening to her vegan propaganda. I have my opinions, you have your's. If I want to know what you think, I'll ask. If you've already told me once and I said no, then definitely shut the heck up.

The movie was good. Informative, funny, entertaining. Morgan Spurlock (the dude I was referring to above) did a good job of just making a documentary without trying to shove his opinion down our throats.

It would be interesting to see what doing the same things would do to a person with a more normal (in other words, bad) diet. He seemed to not really ever eat McDonald's before he started filming the movie. I mean he puked on Day 2 already.

UT versus OSU basketball

January 17, 2005 at 10:14 PM

The officiating in college basketball is so bad that it makes the game painful to watch. I only caught the second half of Texas' game with Oklahoma State but it was a good one. Huge audience on national TV and the Horns stepped up and knocked off the number five ranked Cowboys.

Hopefully it wasn't PJ Tucker's last game as a Longhorn, but it sure looks that way.

A tough loss for the Texas basketball team but most likely one that'll make them a much better team in the long run. It would have been a huge win on national TV, but they're still young and should pull out more of these close ones as these season goes on.

Christina and I are watching The O.C. again. Season two so far is just more of the same, though that's not necessarily a bad thing.

They've essentially doubled the cast, since instead of Ryan, Seth, Marissa, and Summer are all dating other random people instead of each other. It also seems to be focusing more on Peter Gallagher and his eyebrows. Although as we found out at the end of last week's episode, that may be just to provide some background on what is going to screw up Ryan's love life this time.

I enjoy most of the plotlines in the show, except the ones that involve someone feeliing sorry for themselves because they're so damn rich. Marissa's I'm an alcholic because my life is so hard phases piss the hell out of me.

Texas vs. TAMU

Coach Mack Brown gets a well deserved Gatorade shower

I think I sat with my head in my hands the entire halftime. After the catastrophic play that turned a sure seven for the Horns into seven points for the damned Aggies, I had no urge to look at that moronic crap the A&M calls a freaking band.

But the Texas team wasn't as down as I was and came back and whooped their ass in the second half. It was a good game to watch and it was good to see Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson's last home games as Longhorns.

You can also check out the photos I took of the game in my photoblog. I took a couple of good action shots and some cool ones of DJ in the number 60 jersey.

It's pretty confusing in the beginning to figure out exactly what's going on, but if you sit and pay attention to the entire movie the story really makes some weird sense. Real different concept and flow, I'm still not exactly sure the real sequence of events. It's kind of a strange cross between The Truman Show and Memento.

Don't laugh, it was actually pretty good. Yes it was girly, but it wasn't the same crappy story line you get from most chick flicks. Not the World Series

Talk about a let down. After watching almost every inning of the two great League Championship Series, I haven't seen more than three total innings of the WS. There was so much national interest in the Sox and Yankees series and I had so much interest in the Astros versus Cardinals series that I guess I just don't give a damn which team wins now.

I can't decide what's going to happen if Boston wins the whole thing, is it going to make the media talk more or less about them?

A surprisingly entertaining movie. The first previews I saw for it had me really wanting to see it, but as I saw more and more previews the less I wanted to see.

Turns out it was actually pretty decent. There's a couple moronic things in it and I can tell why it got poor reviews. The worst part of it is that there are several storylines that they just completely forget about in the end. They spend time building relationships between characters, and then when the real action starts they seem to have forgotten what the hell they were doing.

Eh, the movie was pretty good but I really would have preferred just to see a well researched and produced documentary on the team than an actual movie about it. I guess the fact that I do already know the story so well from multiple documentaries meant the movie showed me nothing really new.

Another well done sports movie though, I'm no hockey expert (thank God) but it seemed to be pretty accurate with all the on-ice action. There weren't really any times when I was disgusted by a lack of realism or anything.

Great drama, easily this season's best new show. It's actually original too. When I first saw the previews and then the pilot, I thought it was going to be a mini-series. There was a ton of action and drama and story development starting from the very first episode. It seems every character on the show has some sort of hidden story, and we're slowly finding them out.

I really don't know who I'm rooting for in this one. I've loved the Braves since I was a little kid, but Lance Berkman plays for Astros. The Braves would definitely be considered a dynasty if they win another World Series, but Houston has never won a postseason series in franchise series. Tough call.

I'd rather have them both win a series before having to play each other, but at least this way one of them has to win. As long as Lance plays well I'll probably be able to be happy for either team.
