Super Bowl ads

February 06, 2005 at 11:56 PM

It was really a pretty weak year for Super Bowl ads. Nothing absolutely hilarious and definitely nothing you'd be laughing with your friends about for weeks to come. I blame Janet Jackson. Few of the ads took any risks and most were just generally uncreative.

You can watch all of tonight's ads and the ones that didn't make the air over at IFILM's Super Bowl Showcase.

Best commercial

Neither of the two funniest commercials actually aired during the Super Bowl, both were banned. Budweiser has a hilarious spot showing us what really caused Jackson's Wardrobe Malfunction last year. Backstage someone uses her outfit to open up a Bud Light and accidentally rips her top. He attempts to tape it back up, but obviously fails. I really don't see what the issue was, it was pretty tame. I guess it was too much of a slap in the face for Jackson, Fox, and the NFL.

Runner up: Lincoln's Lust

Best commercial to actually air

Ameriquest: Don't judge too quickly

Ameriquest's Tazer Scare and Cat Killer were both really funny. The first one had a guy using a hands free headset to talk on his cell phone at a convenience store. Unfortunately for him, he tells the person on the fun they're getting robbed. The store clerk misunderstands and hilarity and violence follow. In the other a man is making dinner when the cat spills spaghetti sauce all over the floor. He picks up the cat and right then the woman walks in to see him standing there with bloody all over the floor, a cat, and a knife. Kudos to Ameriquest for having the two of the best commercials yesterday.

Runner up: NFL Network's Showtunes

Worst commercial

GoDaddy: Strapless

GoDaddy.com is a great domain registrar. Unfortunately their attempt at a sexy and controversial commercial was neither. A buxom brunette is in front of a censorship panel and her strap keeps falling off. The whole thing was lame and looked cheaply done. They do have domains for $3.99 right now though, can't beat that.

Runner up: McDonald's Lincoln Fry

Most disturbing

The Easter Bunny creeps me out

I've got no idea what they were thinking. The Emerald Nuts' commercial was just plain creepy. It's got unicorns, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Clause all letting a little girl know that they won't really die if she eats her dad's Emerald Nuts. The Easter Bunny and unicorn are really odd looking and certainly won't make me rush to buy some almonds or whatever they're selling.

Runner up: Cialis' Good Times

What I don't get is why either one of them was pulled?

The Bud Light one more rude than offensive and the Lincoln ad was just hilarious. It wasn't actually banned, Ford just pulled it rather than deal with the backlash from whiners. They complained that the priest, the little girl, and the word "LUST" were in too close proximity to each other. Lame.
