VOOM To Cease Operations?
Wow, that would suck big time for a lot of people. I have been thinking of getting Voom on and off for a while now, and I'd probably have it already if they didn't require a land-line phone.
According to online reports, VOOM has about 26,000 subscribers, creating in the neighborhood of $5,900,000 in revenue. Total operating expenses will top out at over $75,000,000 this year creating a virtual black hole of profitability, even for the deep-pocketed Cablevision.
That blows.

Texas brings WiFi to rest stops
The Texas Department of Transportation has signed a deal with Coach Connect to provide WiFi at highway rest stops. Now I never have to go more than fifty miles without checking my email.
Cost for 20 minutes will be $1.99, followed by $3.99 for 24 hours, $7.99 for a week, or $29.99 per month. Coach Connect hopes also to support this network of hotspots with the help of sponsors.
That's not really bad, but having to pay and deal with advertisers is just a little much.

Google AdSense
I'm sure you've noticed the ads here on this site, they're powered by Google's AdSense. It's a simple and unobtrusive way for me to earn enough money to pay to maintain this site. Even with my limited readership, I've earned about $50 in the last three months, more than enough to pay the entire year's costs. Wonderful tool for webmasters, I can't imagine how much more popular sites bring in.
Simple request for Google's team though, how bout coming up with an actual logo so I don't have to make my own?

MovableType 3.14 released
Six Apart has reacted quickly and gotten an update out to fix the server loads caused by comment spam. MT 3.14 (what happened to 3.13?) fixes a major issue for sites out there getting hit by large and frequent comment spam attacks. Previously, if a spammer hit the site and attempted to post tons of comments, each attempt would cause a rebuild even if the comment did not get through MT-Blacklist. Looks like another new version of that is coming soon too.
The main changes in version 3.14:
- No more unnecessary rebuilds upon comment moderation.
- Generation of internal bookkeeping data for dynamic pages is not performed when using static pages.
- New weblogs default to having comment moderation enabled.
Good job guys, I'm sure we all appreciate the swift response.
