Bobby Cox named NL Manager of the Year
Bobby Cox and Buck Showalter were named the managers of the year today. Finally Cox won the damn thing, thirteen straight division titles and it's only his second time to win it (he did win it in 1985 with Toronto).

Not really a surprise, but Texas linebacker Derrick Johnson has been named one of the four finalists for the Lombardi Award. The award goes to the nation's top lineman or linebacker.

Nintendo DS shipping early?
I got an email this morning from Gamestop letting me know the DS would be shipping a week early. Woohoo! This means there will be plenty of time to get it up on eBay for the shopping season.

Bloglines pimps Firefox
Coinciding with the official release of Firefox 1.0, Bloglines has a page just for information on Firefox. Great info on what it is, and even better has links to two crucial extensions for people who use both Bloglines and Firefox. I've been using the Toolkit extension for a couple of months now, it's great and makes it easy to keep tabs on when my feeds are updated. There's also a new one called LiveLines that lets you add feeds to your Bloglines subscriptions with one click using the new Firefox feeds icon.

Bevo Beat
Okay, yeah it's a pretty lame name but it's actually usually a pretty good read. "Bevo Beat" is a blog from the Austin-American Statesman covering UT athletics. It's written by all the beat writers that cover the Horns on a daily basis, so it often has some interesting stuff. It's just random news, observations, and opinions but I enjoy it.
Update:Berg and I have started our own Longhorns sports weblog with an equally lame name, check us out at BevoSports.com. (8/29/2005)

Texas sixth in newest BCS
Rankings stayed pretty much the same, but Texas passed Utah to move up to sixth in the rankings. We are .0393 ahead of Utah and .0086 behind number five Wisconsin. Utah is guaranteed a BCS bowl berth if they're in the top six, while we're only guaranteed one if we're in top four.

D-Backs fire Backman after 4 days
The Arizona Diamondbacks hired Wally Backman without doing a background check. Now after the recent revelations about his history, he's been fired.
Just a couple days ago Diamondbacks' officials stated they would have hired him even if they did know about his history. Why the change in opinion?
Not to be too judgemental, but he does kinda look like white trash. I guess years and years of chewing tobacco isn't good for your smile after all.

Election results by county
Similar to the state map, but what really stood out to me was the square mileage won. Bush won 2.51 million square miles and Kerry won 511,700 square miles.
Look at Texas, what county is that right in the middle? Did Kerry win Travis County?
Update: Yep, Kerry took Travis county by 50,000 votes. Here's the Texas votes by county. Damn liberal Longhorns! :-)

QB attempts 101 passes
Jesus, that's a lot of pass attempts in one game, the previous record was 92 attempts. I wonder how many times they ran the ball.
Lensch completed 56 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns, with three interceptions, and remarkably was not sacked. He is averaging 59 attempts and 308 yards passing this season for Dana College, a 500-student NAIA school in Blair, Neb.
To put that in perspective, Texas quarterback Vince Young has attempted 143 passes all season!

Apple doesn't want your opinion
Apple sure has been acting like a big arrogant a-hole of a company lately. First they ignored the defect in the 4G iPods, and now they've implemented a customer rating system on the Apple Store that doesn't allow you to actually rate any Apple products. Why?
Why can’t customers rate Apple products? Would you trust us to display less than perfect ratings on our own products? We didn’t think so!
Here's a nice screenshot of it from Gizmodo.

Some of the best:
Do you hear that knocking...President Bush's re-election is at the door.
In southern states they beat him like a rented mule.
What about Michigan? It's been out there for a long time. Is that making your fingernails sweat?
He used a similar one back in 2002:
It's beginning to get exciting as the Democrats' fingernails are starting to sweat.
Hilarious. It's amazing what a SFA education gets you. (via Jeremy Flint)

Spurrier won't coach UF
Steve Spurrier has withdrawn his name from the University of Florida head coach search. There's gonna be some pissed Gators fans.
This is also probably make the UT conspiracy theorists think this implies he will coach Texas next year.
