Nolan Ryan backs W

October 29, 2004 at 05:54 PM
Twenty-four Olympians and professional athletes have endorsed President Bush and signed the following letter expressing their support, noting, "In these critical times, our President has had the courage to stand up and do what's right. For that and for his unwavering character, we choose George W. Bush as our President for the next four years."

I have more respect for Nolan Ryan than most other people in this country, so knowing he supports George W. Bush is actually important.

However, I don't hold Kerri Strug's endorsement in as high a regard. (via Orangebloods forums)

Astros want Biggio back

October 28, 2004 at 07:18 PM

The Astros have picked up Craig Biggio's $3 million option for next season, and I can't say I'm overly happy about it. Biggio is still a serviceable hitter, but runs and throws like a girl so he's a liablity in the outfield. I'd like to finally give Jason Lane a shot out there.

Nothing else matters though unless they manage to resign Carlos Beltran, and I have my doubts about that.

He hates politics too...

October 27, 2004 at 08:58 PM

I think pretty much every sane person is getting real tired of politics right now. I can't even read several design weblogs I usually frequent because I'm hit over the head with political "discussions." It's one thing to voice your opinion and state the reasons, it's another to just bash the other side unabashedly. I like how both sides think the other is pure evil and are complete morons. What's great is they're both right!

Normalized data is for sissies

October 27, 2004 at 11:51 AM

Kottke discusses database normalization and when and why it's important, or maybe why it's not important.

Personally it makes some things a pain in the ass, but I believe it's definitely neccessary. Getting the data you need sometimes requires complicated queries, but when you're adding or editing data it only has to go one place.

Wow, it's been forever since I've heard someone (other than me or Christina) actually mention normalization.

Sony PSP box

Some official news on the Sony PSP finally, it'll be out in Japan on December 12th and will retail for just under $200 US.

No official word on the US release date or price, but it should be early next year and approximately the same price.

UK paper's anti-Bush letter-writing campaign hacked

October 27, 2004 at 09:21 AM

The same paper where they suggested someone assasinate George W. Bush apparently launched an anti-Bush letter writing campaign. They thought they should try to influence America's election by influencing a swing county in a swing state.

Well good old Americans got pissed with the Brits trying to interfere in our elections, wrote angry letters and even hacked the paper's website.

Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, you're probably getting really tired of people telling you how you should vote. Shut up, I don't care how you're voting and I certainly don't want to hear how you think I should vote.

The iPod Photo

October 26, 2004 at 01:44 PM
iPod Photo: Now Playing album art

Apple has surprisingly announced the iPod Photo is ready to be released in the next couple of weeks. I'd link to it but the Apple site blows and won't let you give direct links, here's the section. (what kind of modern site puts a phone number as a folder name in a website?)

The photo displaying capability isn't all that important to me, but it does have a nice looking color screen and supposedly gets 15 hours of battery life. It also display album art if available when playing a song, pretty cool. Unfortunately the 40 GB iPod Photo is heavier and thicker than the 40 GB 4G iPod.

IGN.com reviews GTA San Andreas

October 26, 2004 at 10:19 AM

IGN gives the game an amazing 9.9 out of 10 and calls it the defining piece of software for the Playstation 2.

It has a production value that's second to none, boasts a faithfulness to '90s source material with an eerie accuracy, and provides more hours of entertainment than all the previous Grand Theft Autos combined.

Gamespot gives it a 9.6 and dishes out the kudos as well. They even have a free video review available.

I must have it.

Author Highlighting in MT

October 26, 2004 at 08:55 AM

Absolutely great help with something I've been planning on implementing here when I get the rest of the comment styling set up. It allows me to easily highlight my own comments so they'll stand out from all of the other ones on an entry. You know... because I'm more important than you.

Dave Shea also adds a helpful comment where he suggests instead of basing it on name, I can use the email field to store a password. Clever.

Orangebloods.com

Orangebloods logo

Orangebloods.com is the Texas Longhorns branch of the Rivals.com network.

For the most part a great site, the articles and news stories are definitely worth the subscription price. Great writing and great information on the Longhorns current team and on recruiting in a very timely manner. The message boards are active and for the most part the posters are intelligent and sane.

It's not cheap ($7 - $10 per month) so I've considered cancelling several times, but I'm always drawn back in by something. There's really no down time anymore, there's always recruiting info and the coverage of the football, basketball, and baseball team is usually lightyears better than any other source.

Update: Berg and I have started our own Longhorn sports weblog, check us out at BevoSports.com. (8/30/2005)

Vince Young named SI.com Player of the Week

October 25, 2004 at 01:14 PM
Vince Young

In SI's Weekend Review they have named Vince Young the player of the week.

It's nice to see him getting some positive press after the beat downs he took in the media (and on this site) about his play the last two weeks. He looked more comfortable and more like the quarterback we were all expecting to see this season.

I particularly liked the photo, it looks like he's giving the Hook 'Em Horns signal and saying "Up yours" at the same time.

Update: Head over to BevoSports.com for Vince Young updates and opinions.

Gators fire Ron Zook

October 25, 2004 at 09:53 AM

Well that didn't take long. After Florida lost to freaking Mississippi State this weekend there was a lot of talk about Ron Zook losing his job after the season, well it's already happened. ESPN is reporting that UF's crappy play along with other incidents have gotten Zook canned.

Ashlee Simpson actually worse than she sounds

October 25, 2004 at 09:04 AM

Wow, I thought Ashlee Simpson was a crappy singer, turns out she's actually crappier than she sounds. She was caught on SNL when she held the mic down at her waist and everyone could still hear her voice singing, the wrong freakin' song.

Update: Christina and I saw Ashlee on the Radio Music Awards last night (10/25) and damn she was horrible. Please Ashlee, for the sake of mankind go back to lip-synching.

Mmmmm... me want. This phone has been climbing my wishlist lately. They said it's actually about the size of my current phone, which I think is the perfect size for a non-flip phone. Overall they seem to really like it. (via Gizmodo)

Gizmodo on Blu-Ray discs

October 22, 2004 at 07:31 AM
Blu-Ray logo

Gizmodo has declared Blu-Ray discs the winner of the next-generation format wars with HD-DVD. (I think that may set some sort of record for hyphens in a sentence.) They cover the technical, financial, and commercial differences between the two formats and the reasons Blu-Ray comes out on top.
