Jimy Williams out as Astros manager

July 14, 2004 at 02:08 PM

It had been rumored the last several days (weeks? years?) that Jimy Williams would be fired as Astros manager. Today it became official. Houston has fired Williams and replaced him on an interim basis with former Brewers and Tigers manager Phil Garner. The firing wasn't much of a surprise, but the hiring of Garner does seem to come out of left field a little. I hadn't heard his name mentioned for this (or any... Continue reading

Jayson Stark on the Home Run Derby

July 13, 2004 at 12:20 PM

This a great article by Jayson Stark over at ESPN.com. It talks a lot about 5-foot-9 Miguel Tejada winning the thing, about the highly touted home run legends participating (Bonds, Sosa, and Rafael Palmeiro), but by far the most entertaining sections are the conversation with Lance. He makes comments about taking as many pitches as possible, so even if he didn't win at least he was on TV a long time. Then when asked... Continue reading

Wow, Berkman is gonna hit right handed

July 12, 2004 at 08:45 PM

Well that's a surprise, Lance is going to bat right handed for the Derby. It's smart to try to take advantage of the Crawford Boxes, but he's such a better hitter from the left side. Well it's a genius idea so far. Already has five homers with only one out! He's hit several bombs as well as a couple line shots. Side note, they just showed that Lance has hit 129 of his 142... Lance Berkman joins Home Run Derby

July 12, 2004 at 10:49 AM

More good news for Lance thanks to Ken Griffey Jr.'s frailty, he'll now be participating in his second career Home Run Derby. It's definitely good for him and it's quite an honor. The more exposure (especially on this kind of stage) the better it is for him and his career. I'm not nearly as excited about it as I am about him starting the actual All-Star Game though, he's always hit a lot of... Continue reading

Fantastic news: Ken Griffey Jr. is hurt!

July 10, 2004 at 09:59 PM

According to Baseball Tonight Griffey is injured (again). Why is this good news? Because if Junior can't play in the All-Star Game that might mean a chance for Lance Berkman to start. He deserved the honor a lot more than Griffey or Sammy Sosa anyways. Berkman's numbers have tailed off (along with the rest of the Astros) the last month but he's still having a better year than almost all NL outfielders not named Bonds.... Continue reading

Ginobili re-signing with Spurs

July 09, 2004 at 12:53 PM

Good news for the San Antonio Spurs, it appears that Manu Ginobili is going to re-sign with the team. It was in doubt for a while there because the Denver Nuggets were talking about throwing some insane amount of money at him. At least a number that was insane for a player who averaged thirteen points and came off the bench last year. You never know what NBA GM's will do these days, after... Continue reading

Carlos Beltran to Houston

June 25, 2004 at 12:49 PM

In a move that really snuck up on me, the Astros acquired centerfielder Carlos Beltran from the Kansas City Royals yesterday. The Houston Chronicle had an article on the deal yesterday morning, but it sounded pretty speculative and also that talks were dead. They were far from it I guess. In a three team deal the Astros sent closer Octavio Dotel to Oakland and catching prospect John Buck to the Royals. The A's sent... Continue reading

Shaq a Maverick? T-Mac a Rocket?

June 22, 2004 at 06:14 PM

What is the basketball world coming to? I don't know how much my view of things is skewed being in Dallas and listening to Dallas sports radio (which by the way is a billion times better than San Antonio sports radio.) But it even seems all the national hosts are talking about is basketball and two of the games biggest stars coming to Texas. I like the deal for Houston. It makes since to give... Continue reading

CWS brackets finally up

June 18, 2004 at 09:20 AM

The pairings and a convuleted text version of how the College World Series would go has been up probably since Monday, but the brackets are finally up too. It makes it a lot easier to see who plays who. Update: This is a post from the 2004 College World Series, though it looks like the same link to the brackets will work soon. Until then, here is a PDF version of the 2005 CWS bracket.... Continue reading

Horns advance to Omaha

June 12, 2004 at 07:59 PM

Despite the fact that I had to watch the game at Texadelphia (stupid freaking cable company. Damn you Grande/Advantex!), the Longhorns whipped Vanderbilt for the second straight game to move on to the CWS. Texas has won all 5 of their NCAA Tourney games and rolled nicely into Omaha. Hopefully they can keep hitting the ball like they did this weekend. If they do, they'll be in good position to win national title number... Continue reading

Texas wins

June 12, 2004 at 07:41 AM

The NCAA Baseball Tournament's Super Regional is underway and the Longhorns are playing great. I was a little worried. They hit a little slide at the end of the regular season and in the Big 12 Tourney, but they cruised through the regionals in three games and beat Vanderbilt last night. It was a great game for the Horns. Offense started off early with 5 runs in the bottom of the second and gave... Continue reading

More reasons to love NCAA Football 2005

June 04, 2004 at 11:14 PM

The anticipation continues to build. NCAA Football 2005 is being released on July 13th. I want this game bad. I can't wait, it's gonna be friggin' awesome. I love the game so much off-line, that I didn't play it online a ton last year. But they've added XBox Live support and other new features so I'll likely to be gaming against fellow human beings a little more often. Sweet feature I didn't hear about till... Continue reading
