Jayson Stark on the Home Run Derby

Lance Berkman at the HR Derby

This a great article by Jayson Stark over at ESPN.com. It talks a lot about 5-foot-9 Miguel Tejada winning the thing, about the highly touted home run legends participating (Bonds, Sosa, and Rafael Palmeiro), but by far the most entertaining sections are the conversation with Lance. He makes comments about taking as many pitches as possible, so even if he didn't win at least he was on TV a long time. Then when asked if the sub-500 homer guys should be given a boost against the big guys, Berkman said, "Maybe we should give them a handicap, because they're getting kinda old." Classic.

By the way, I personally think he might have won the damn thing if his pitcher hadn't tired so much. In the first two at bats the guy was laying them in there perfectly: waist high and inside half of the plate. In the final round, he was throwing them consistently low and away. The last three Lance hit out were in a great location again, but then he already had nine outs. Oh well, he did great and it was fun to see.
