Semicolons blow

I really have no earthly idea when to use semicolons. I imagine I could count the times I correctly used them in the last five years on one hand.

I usually just start a new sentence. Can't really go wrong there. But when I do use one, I use it to separate closely related independent clauses. Because that makes all kinds of sense right?

Sample sentence --

Reesey is gone; therefore, we miss her.
Reesey is being trained; thus, reesey is going to be a good girl.
