IGN Madden 2006 review

August 06, 2005 at 09:42 PM

Good but not great, I've already made the decision to not get it and get the Xbox 360 version instead when it comes out.

I had high hopes for this game, its features have increased but I got very disappointed with it. I bought the PS2 version of game the night it came out, have played it for not even a week but its frozen four times so far and tonight I was about to break the damn CD cause the pixels lost color and it looks like I am making the CGI instead of playing the game (the colors are messed up). Im taking back my copy and getting my refund...I'll stick to my 04 copy till the Ps3 comes out.

Ea Sports can't even get the Rams uniforms right. I am a Rams fan as you can tell by my comment. The Rams wear their gold pants with their dark blue jerseys at home. Instead they gave them white pants, without even having the option of changing to gold. Thats pretty weak. You go and give teams multiple uniforms from the past and you can't even give them the ones they wear in the present. Most people might think this is no big deal but you know the saying, "If it's in the game it's in the game". The option for the right uniforms should be "in the game"!

madden 2006 sucks!!!!!!! it will cheat you a lot of times. if you are winning late in the 4th quarter the opposing team will make a heroic comeback and your players will turn in to little leaguers. it will make a lot of glitches!!

Madden sucks this year!!! When the opposing team punts the ball your players will just stand there looking dumb and not block. The whole qb vision thing sucks too! And when you pass the ball to a player who is wide open they will drop the ball. Your D drops too many interceptions too. It has also gotten to the point where i can be madden as the commentator. I know exactly what he is going to say on each and every play. Another thing about passing, say a safety is cheating toward one receiver leaving another receiver open, then when you throw to him, miracly the safety comes back to him and makes the INT. Or if you are throwing deep there will be about 6 or 7 man coverage on one man. Another thing that hasn't been fixed for years is the challenges. They never get reversed in your favor when they should be, especially when you run the ball on fourth down and don't get it. This is possibly the last year i buy madden depending, after i rent it, what it is like next year.

"Its in the game"? Yeah right. They can't even follow the official NFL rules when it comes to playoff match ups.

PROOF:

To prove my point, I simulated the entire season to match the actual results of the current NFL season

Problem 1: Madden does not follow NFL tie break procedures when determining playoff seeding.

Four teams in the NFC finished 11-5 (Giants, Bucs, Bears, Panthers). The offical NFC playoff seedings are as follows:

1. Seahawks
2. Bears
3. Bucs
4. Giants
5. Panthers
6. Redskins

The Bears got the #2 seed over the Bucs, because the Bears beat them in week 12.

However in Madden using the EXACT same game results, the game has the Bucs getting the first round bye over the Bears DESPITE the fact they LOST to the Bears during the Regular season! Makes no sense.

Problem 2: Madden does NOT take the playoff seeding in account when determining the Divisional matchups.

Below are the official AFC Playoff Seedings from 1 - 6.

1. Colts (14-2) AFC South champs
2. Broncos (13-3) AFC West champs
3. Bengals (11-5) AFC North champs
4. Patriots (10-6) AFC East champs
5. Jaguars (12-4)
6. Steelers (11-5)

In the wildcard week, the #6 Steelers beat the #3 Bengals and the #4 Patriots beat the #5 Jaguars.

Next week, the #6 Steelers will play the #1 Colts and the #4 Patriots will play the #2 Broncos. This is because the lowest seeded winner from wildcard will ALWAYS play the #1 seed in the divisional playoffs and the highest seed will play the #2 seed.

However Madden got this wrong as well. Again simulating the same wildcard results in Madden, the game has the #4 Patriots playing the #1 Colts and the #6 Steelers playing the Broncos. It appears that Madden is only using the team records to determine the divisional matchups. Which is wrong. I know for a fact that this bug has been in the game since 2003. Its unacceptable that it has not even been touched.

A website is coming soon complete with screenshots showing these bugs.

Its obvious no quality control is performed over there. I even wrote them about this bug, and they acted like they didn't even care telling me "hope it doesn't appear in next years version". Wow great customer care and support.

This is my last EA game for good. Since EA bought there way out of competition, I just won't be playing any football games until the contract expires.

I'm glad others have caught on to what I've been seeing. The game is atrocious. They might as well have a flaming ball because there simply is no football simulation going on. Online play is a travesty... assuming you get beyond the gimmicky-stupid plays that are always to be found, chances are your opponent will quit or more likely give you a sync error. He dumps the game and gets the win.

I'm sorry to say I won't be buying Madden next year. There are some things to like about it, but its just too flimsy... the online ranking system is worthless and theres no good way to filter your competition to make for good games.

Just sad because simple things could have made it so much better.

are people still syncing in 2006?

i bought the 2005 version and played it heaps...i became very good and made the top 150 on the online rankings for pc, only to find that the "best" players were all the same person"multiple accounts" and had ridiculous ranking points. maybe 10/200 top players still played the game (in january) and these 10 ran the same cheesy plays (weather on D or O) and if they were behind would synch....synching is not hard to do but its lame.....i will be buying the 2007 version although it will be terrible just to play online......was wondering if the same cheesey players were still on there????

hopefully this forum is popular....i searched it opn google...but teh last post was on feb 2006 so i dont fancey my chances of getting a response....

peace
