IOGEAR USB Hub & Card Reader

July 04, 2005 at 05:03 PM

Saw PCMag's review of the IOGEAR USB Hub and Card Reader yesterday and thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on it since I've had it for about four months now.

IOGEAR USB Hub/Card reader

They give it a 4.5 out of 5 and for the most part I agree. It's a great multifunction product that doesn't always work for me like it's supposed to. IOGEAR has merged a USB 2.0 hub and a 12-in-4 memory card reader into a sleek little device. If you need the extra ports or have a digital camera and a ton of different memory cards laying around you should definitely give it some consideration.

I have had some minor issues with it, probably not deal breakers but something you might want to keep in mind. With my configuration, Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a home-built PC, the IOGEAR hub often has trouble when the PC comes out of standby or other long idle periods. The PC will pop up alerts (for each of the four memory card slots) stating that it failed to recognize the USB device, and the memory card reader doesn't function at all. Not functioning would be a big problem, but it's so easy to fix that it becomes just a minor inconvenience. Simply unplug the USB and power cables from the hub for a few seconds and when you plug them back in the problem's solved.

Rating: 4/5

The IOGEAR USB and Card Reader is a great combination of two useful devices, so if you can find it for under $30 (Best Buy charges $50, I paid closer to $22), then it's worth picking up.
