Review: Passion of the Christ

Passion of the Christ

I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I came away from watching The Passion of the Christ with a lot of dissapointment. It was a good movie, but not as earth-shattering or shocking as I had been lead to believe. The reviews and uproar made it seem like it was going to be some sort of life changing event.

It was a well shot, well acted, and accurate depiction of Christ's life, but it wasn't anything new or revolutionary. It was all pretty much as I had imagined it before, it just put a picture on things for people. I guess my mind had already done a pretty good job of that on my own.

As for the actual quality of the movie, it was definitely a good movie and worth seeing. James Caviezel (Jesus) played a very convincing role and his casting was a good call. He's an excellent actor who isn't so famous that you'd be thinking about him the whole time. I don't like the casting of Monica Belluci (Mary Magdalene) though, she's too beautiful and too recognizable. Everytime I saw her I was thinking about that.

As for the other actors, they all did a good job creating an immersive and believable environment. There wasn't anything that really took away from the setting and the mood. The only thing that kind of took away from the movie was Satan poking her head into some of the more somber and crucial scenes. She was really creepy and didn't really disrupted the flow and feel. The scene where she's walking through the crowd carrying the weird little midget baby had me wondering WTF? rather than what I'm guessing Mel was trying to convey.

Overall an excellent movie that everyone should see, but not what I was hoping or expecting.
