Samsung SlimFit Widescreen TV

February 24, 2005 at 07:36 AM

Wow, I'm actually falling in love with a TV that's (almost) moderately priced. It's certainly more reasonable than most of the electronics I have on my ever-growing wishlist.

What's really cool about the new Samsung SlimFit 30" Widescreen TV (more images) is that is has the price and quality of a CRT TV but manages to weigh in at less than a ton. A suggested retail price of $1199 means that it won't be hard to find the set for under a thousand dollars. CRT's really do a much better job with color, motion, black levels, brightness, and everything else than even the newest technologies. In my opinion, only plasmas can compete in overall picture quality and those are obviously in a much different price category. Being able to get a high quality CRT in an attractive, slender form factor is really going to make this TV and those like it big sellers.

Samsung SlimFit Widescreen TV

I really like the Samsung DLP rear projection I have now so I trust the brand, and if we ever get HD at my apartment complex (Grande sucks!) I'd like a second high-def set for the bedroom. This SlimFit 30" would do nicely.

Mmmmm high definition...

Update: A couple of updates that I stumbled on today about the television. Samsung's official page is up and includes the official specs and a video. It also looks like it's on sale at your local retailers for a suggested price of $999. Best Buy already has it on sale for $949 and it's only $899 at Circuit City. Not bad at all. (5/30/2005)

It's not a totally different TV Peter, just looks like early on in development they couldn't decide which part would be black and which would be silver.

I still haven't had a chance to check it out in retail stores since I knew it was release, but according to the images on Best Buy's site I guess they decided to go with the black around the screen (which I like because it makes the picture seem brighter.)

I updated the picture in the post to reflect the actual TV and not just the computer render from months ago.

Nebraska Furniture Mart sells the TV for $859. Best Buy and Circuit City will match the price in Omaha and Kansas City.

I heard LG is introducing their version of a reduced depth CRT.
I think these are going to be HDTV for the masses.
Have you heard about anything larger than 32 in. being worked on?

deedee...do you live on an indian burial ground? is your house haunted? my t.v. turns off by itself all the time, but that's just because there's a presence living in my basement. sorry you're having troubles though...these things weigh a lot for anybody to mess with, let alone a single woman.

I bought a Slimfit in August 2005, and immediately had problems with it turning itself on and off at random. I had it replaced right away with a second Slimfit, and that set has worked fine ever since.

Our 8 month old Slimfit decided to quit working and we are getting no help from Samsung to fix it under the warranty. They say since the closest service center is in Omaha (I live in St. Paul, MN) they don't know how they will service it! After numerous attempts to get them to do something, all I get are apologies. When I leave my number on a supervisors voice mail I get no response. The last guy I talked to couldn't understand why I was getting angry since "it hasn't been months yet" since the problem occured! POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!

I am having the same problem with my tv, someone is supposed to come service it, but after reading these comments I am not optimistic. Has anyone had luck with getting it fixed? or, is the only option to exchange it?

Purchased this TV and it stopped working after 6 months. Called customer support and they said it would take 3 weeks for a repair person to get to it. After several delays they said they would replace it but only with a lower value unit unless I wanted to send them some more money. In short it has been two months and still no replacement, and no help from customer support. ****** DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG ****** Stay far far away. BUY ANYTHING ELSE.

Hmmm...its not just the slimfit. I have the samsung 61" and it continues to turn itself off. The customer service folks tell me to unplug and hold the on button as there is a static charge that develops...however, if they said it happens again, call in for repair. Of course, its christmas and we can't gather around to watch the tv or play playstation because it keeps shutting off... I"m calling tomorrow to get this thing out of here.

Stay away from Nebraska furniture mart, I have a JVC tv from there and it has been in the shop for 2 months at Aksarben TV (they suck) under Nfm's warranty (rip off). Aksarben says it's waiting on parts or they fixed it and another part went bad. They are liars and crooks beware.

I have a 41" Samsung. It has turned itself off continuously for 6 months. Warranty has expired and now I have spent $500 to have it fixed. Still doing it. Samsung offers no support otherthan answering their phones and saying they have never heard of this problem Obviously it is common. Their company is obviously not interested in producing quality products or having integrity. Repair companies have no idea what is causing the problem. I am on my third call to my repair company. Do not purchase any Samsung Electronics.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SAMSUNG PRODUCT.

BUYER BE WARE! Almost one year after I purchased the Samsung SlimFit TV (model TX-R3079WH) it began showing a green and red color band on the screen and started generating a high-pitched whine. Because it was still under warranty I had it serviced to fix the color bands at no cost to me, but the service center said they could not identify the sound and recommended I contact Samsung. When I called them a very helpful service rep extended my warranty another 3 months so I could have the sound problem fixed for at no cost and then asked me to contact the TV service company to have them come out and work on the sound problem. Before the service company could do that, they told me I needed to give them a copy of the receipt so they could contact Samsung and verify the warranty extension. I did and they said that Samsung told them the service rep lady that told me she would extend my warranty wasn't authorized to make that extension and it was invalid!

Unfortunately it was around this time that my work put me out of town for for several months weeks and I couldn't follow-up getting this sorted out. I'm home now and on May 2nd (2007) the TV started turning itself off after about 45 minutes of being on. It continues to do and I'm so fed up that I am paying to recycle this TV and get it out of my life. And the funny thing is, I just purchased a brand new Sharp LCD TV for only a few hundred more than I paid for this P.O.S. a year-and-a-half ago.

I too have this problem with my 32 in' SlimFit!! It powers off after about 45 minutes, then proceeds to take less and less time to shut off. It also creates a high pitch squeal when turning on. The letterbox viewing is slightly curved at the bottom. I am planning on just trashing this worthless piece of crap. Worse $600 bucks I ever spent... well, aside from that one time in Bangkok where I thought it was a woman until it was too late.

I purchased this tv new: Samsung SlimFit TV (model TX-R3079WH)a little after a year - of course just after the warranty expired it emits this loud high pitch noise that squeals so loud I have to turn off instead of getting a headache. I called Samsung and they were very polite but knew nothing about the TV or the problem and suggested I have someone come out and repair it.
This 100+ pound monster is being tossed and I will never again buy Samsung products - ever.

I have slimfit 30", I thought I had the only lemon but I see from the postings that Samsung is a Giant Lemon. The first time it started shutting off it was under warrenty, they replaced the whole motherboard and worked for a year. Now it's doing the same old crap again. Clicking noise, won't turn on at all. I will never buy another Samsung product!

I bought a Samsung 56" DLP a year and a half ago. It keeps turning itself off now. I unplugged it from the UPS I was using and plugged it into the wall-worked for a day!! I even tried just a surge protector with he same results. The manual said that dust could cause this and so I thoroughly cleaned it and have watched tv for an hour with no incident. I'll post next week if this does indeed solve the issue.
Just an FYI, all DLP and projection tv's will eventually have some weird issue. I recommend LCD-I have used a Maganvox 42" 1080P LCD($999 from costco) in my office for gaming and computer for several months with no incident. DLP's suck!!!

the same problems as everybody else, the convergence is the
worst I've ever seen and now it shuts off all the time. Nice of Samsung to stand behind their product.I never used to think Ill of Samsung, now I will bad mouth them at every
opportunity.Should'nt we be trying a class action suit to get
these jokers to fix thier obviously poor engineering?
