My Gift This Christmas... A Special Christmas Box

December 25, 2006 at 06:32 PM

NBC may have actually figured out this whole Internet thing finally. Last December they were pulling the hilarious "Lazy Sunday" (the Chronicles of Narnia Rap) off of YouTube but this year they're actually putting funny, exclusive content up on the site. Check out the NSFW, uncensored Christmas song from Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake below:

The song isn't actually any funnier with the expletive in the song than it was without it. The most interesting part of the whole thing is the backstory from the New York Times. Sounds like the guys at Saturday Night Live and NBC's executives know that they can't just throw any garbage up on YouTube and have it be a hit. If they choose selectively and only make the best behind-the-scenes or uncensored clips available they might be able to boost interest in their website and the show.

Next year should be an interesting one for YouTube. By the end of 2007 the popular video site will not exist as we know it today. With Google purchasing the site and the television networks no longer looking the other way, the vast amounts of copyrighted material that is the primary draw of the site won't be around for long if YouTube seeks to become profitable. They'll have to get into bed with the networks and that means more restrictions on user-submitted videos. If the networks provide unique and interesting content YouTube could be a success, if they don't it'll be history.
