Xbox 360 prices set at $299 and $399

August 20, 2005 at 02:40 PM

Microsoft has offically confirmed the price rumors we've been hearing for a while now, there will be a base version for $299 and a premium version with a hard drive for $399.

Xbox 360 premium package

The base version will include everything most gamers will want to have: the console, one wired controller, and the basic power and A/V cables you'll need to get started. The premium version ups the ante by including a 20 GB hard drive, one wireless controller, headset, ethernet cord (whoopee!), and a wireless remote control. The hard drive and the wireless control are certainly the biggest draw in upgrading. The remote control would be pretty cool if you happen to own a Media Center PC, but I'm a little unsure if it's really included or not. It's not in the picture included with the announcement and it also doesn't look like it's pictured on the side of the box.

$100 is a little too much extra for a hard drive that probably cost fifteen bucks, an upgraded controller (another ten dollars) and a thirty dollar remote. I'll see how much all these extras cost separately before making a decision about which version is the best buy.

By the way, Free360XBOX.com is giving away the premium version with their referral program.

Update: I read this post from Major Nelson before but must've skimmed over half the details. The remote is included for a limited time and the premium pack comes with HD AV cables.
