Latest steroid rumor

August 18, 2005 at 07:56 PM

Rumors are flying all over the place that two baseball superstars have tested positive for steroids and are going through the system. Reportedly, they're almost through the appeals process and their names will be released in the next couple of days.

Roger Clemens

However, one of the two names that are floating to the top of the list is Roger freaking Clemens. Roger isn't a superstar, he's a legend. He's probably one of the top 3 pitchers of all time. Clemens testing positive would put a big black eye for the game and permanently tarnish the last twenty years of baseball history. While catching another star player or two might be a good thing for the league and show that they're not hiding anything and that the steroid program is working, this is completely different.

The other name that is being bandied about a lot is Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon. A very popular player, but not exactly of the same caliber as Clemens. The general noise is that it's a player from the Red Sox and either the Houston Astros or St. Louis Cardinals. The other players that have been mentioned are Manny Ramirez, Scott Rolen, Albert Pujols, and Craig Biggio. Some pretty big names.

Again, this is just a rumor but it's a pretty loud rumor. There's nothing official on whether anyone has tested positive and certainly any speculation on who it might be is just that. Just my gut feeling, but I give the rumor that someone has been busted about a 7 out of 10 on my BS-o-meter. The rumor that that someone was Roger Clemens more like a 4, I just can't imagine he'd be dumb enough to take that chance.

Update: I just heard on ESPN Radio 103.3 that he's hearing that sixty-one players are currently in the appeals process. Wow. (8/19/2005)

More pitchers have tested positive than position players, so actually they do use them. There's a big article on pitchers juicing in this month's ESPN the Magazine.
