The Harajuku posse is definitely bizarre, but Gwen Stefani has become increasingly bizarre herself over the years. I chalk it up the the side effects of fame. As for the fact that her interpretation of true Harajuku style is twisted, flawed, commercialized, and presumably aimed at selling records doesn't surprise me at all. I don't know why it would surprise or upset anyone, actually. If there's one thing everyone should expect from the entertainment industry, it's that there is rarely anything pure.

All kind of entertainment artists employ hype men, so to speak. No one complained about Snoop and Bishop Magic Don Juan, or Kid Rock and Joe C, or Arrested Development and Baba Oje, or Prince and Diamond & Pearl.

Why should Gwen Stefani by singled out? Besides her, I didn't see anyone BUT Asians in the 'Hollaback Girl' video. If anything, I give her props for hiring so many Asians, in an industrial climate that generally excludes them, AND for cleverly promoting her ASIAN friend's clothing line, Bananas(for those who wonder what bananas had to do with anything).

The video has an abundance of Asian girls yes, but try to count the number of asian guys in the video. I couldn't even count one. The industrial climate of hollywood only excludes asian males, while asian females tend to be exoticized and exploited as such. okay, personally, ive always looked up to gwen because i think she is a fairly good singer, and she's somewhat a role model to me fashion wise because i want to be a designer.

but im also really into japanese culture and the whole "fruits", "harajuku style" or whatever you want to call it. and it just kinda pisses me off a little bit that she does walk around with her harajuku girls, her so called new "best friends", because everytime i see her in an interview, they dont even get to talk. i know its gwen's interview but i would think they would atleast get to say something since they were SUCH an inspiration to her cd. & if gwen knew anything about japanese street fashion, she'd know that its been around since like 95. i think she's a little late..

this doesnt really surprise me though. she's exploited other cultures for fasion statements. ex. the "bindi" she used to wear on her forehead. the whole rasta thing.
i mean, what culture is next?

I think it was the Daily Show where Craig Kilborn was interviewing John Test, and Craig asked John something like, "Do you actually listen to your own music?" John replied something like, "Hell no - I don't like this music. I just do this for a paycheck."

Some great comments on this article. Was refreshing to see some naive ones as well... I can almost remember when I was so innocent.

All you people who are slagging the album have no idea what you are talking about! Gwen has gone back to the basics with this album and I think its brilliant. The songs have that 80's sound to them which was really the music that inspired here to sing. And as for the Harajuku girls, I think it was a great way to raise awareness about other cultures, and all my friends and I have got really interested in Japanese Culture, and have realised that there is a whole different world out there that is just waiting to be cracked open and its all thanks to Gwen! She has the most amazing style and always has, and is willing to stir things up and try new things in the name of fashion and thats what makes a true herione. She is a true style queen and has put colour and life back into the music business, and in the middle of all this, she is still as modest as ever, saying she looks on herself as a dorky fat kid, when she is absolutely stunning. She is a true idol becuase she has been a witness of suicide, been picked on when she was younger and has jerks like you people telling her where she is going wrong every day of the week!

I don't think the harajuku fashion should be mainstreamed at all - it is unique and new, it doesn't deserve to be "advertised" the way it is.
Harajuku fashion is about standing out yet Gwen Stefani makes herself the only one who stands out, as she dresses them all in the same clothes.

Who wouldn't walk around in designer clothes following someone famous? I sure would if I got money!

Gwen Stefani used to sell records on the black market, and went through a lot before this; I don't think she would do this just for money.

I think Gwen's re-formed style of Harajuku is really punk and cool. But the thing is that real Harajuku girls don't dress like that. The real Harajuku Girls were groupies for a band called X-Japan. The lead singer commited suicide and the band split up. I guess the band was really gothic because all the pictures of really Harajuku girls are all goth or erotic. So the Groupies always gather with these wild insane costumes every sunday on Harajuku bridge. It's like a memorial. Some of the pictures are really weird! So if Gwen likes what she's doing great, but it's not the truth.

Ok... First of all, I've always disliked japanese fashion, it's just that japanese people seems so obsessed in looking "american" or "british"... or anything different from themselves.
Just look to what it's like to dress like a total Harajuku Girl or guy... you just throw to yourself a bunch of clothes from different trends... suddenly, you're wearing hip-hop pants, with a punkish sweater and goth makeup... and yes... sleepers... It's just stupid.
Anyway, I somehow like the way Gwen dresses, let's face it, she's got style and whatever she wears will suit her... It's not her fault that a bunch of people thinks like me... and gets disturbingly and totally obsessed with her, and she earns money with all of them.
That kind of Japanese Culture it's somehow idiotic, you know, the one that embraces and creates idols from the hollywood crew: just look how they were so obsessed with Backstreet Boys or Paris Hilton... they so want to be americans, it's pathetic...
Well, I don't mean to generalize, I know there are many japanese individuals, that feel sad, when they see those kind of attitudes, like most of us, when we see stupid teenagers stalking pop stars, as if those pop stars actually had talent.
But anyway, I don't care what Gwen's doing with those girls... she sure is paying them to do so!!!
I just think that it's totally dumb for the rest of the world to create stereotypes, as if every japanese is going to dress "harajuku"... And it's even more stupid to say that through these "so called harajuku fashion" you're now interested in Japan... Please, read something!!!! History will tell you that there's far more about countries and cultures!!!
I applaud Gwen for having such great vision for business, she's adapted an image for herself, and it's become a great success.

For anyone who may be curious, Gwen Stefani isn't exactly the female Asian marketing buff she's being made out to be. This is what I've picked up from several articles I've read on this other the past couple years.

Point one, Stefani takes a trip to Japan with her husband after the two are wed. She discovers the Harajuku culture, blah blah blah, she's interested and inspired to write. The album came first; the clothing lines came later.
Stefani first meets 'Angel', born and raised in L.A. Is she Harajuku? No. Can she even speak Japanese? No, but she can dance and that’s what she’s signed to do.
The remaining three are from all over Japan, of course this doesn't make them Harajuku. You can't pluck any Harajuku female (or any other person or any ethnicity) off the streets and expect them to be able to dance. These girls all worked and auditioned for the parts.

Point two, Yes. I'm sure Gwen's big boss management saw this as a money maker, but look at what it started with - the singer's inspiration, isn't that how everything in the music business should start? (Regardless of how well you like Love.Angel.Music.Baby., or Gwen in general) Stereotypical or not, it's still better to write songs reflecting personal inspiration, rather then having them written for you. (This is done much too often in the industry, as far as I'm concerned.)

Upon reading other articles, yes. Stefani does interact with the girls off-stage. She, apparently, takes them shopping, gives them benefits on her own clothing and accessory lines, and has them over to her house, and interacts on a friendly basis quiet often.

My thoughts? The girls were hired for talent, not strictly because of their ethnicity (though that would be a requirement in this case). Stefani treats the girls as she would close friends, not as pets. I certainly don’t think these ladies are authentic Harajuku, but Stefani summarizes the culture as having a wild sense of fashion, which they have as far as Americans’ go. Forgive my being frank, but she’s on MTV with these girls: she can’t be expected to fully demonstrate authentic Harajuku lifestyle and culture when the audience it’s being explained to are 11-17 year old American television absorbed teens.

Personally i liked her better with No Doubt because it was more rock and she didn't seem as girly girlish. I'd like to see her a little more knowledgable about J-pop and J-rock (not that i am or anything), but she could pay tribute to Mona, the reason teens and young people hang out their. MOna used to go to work wearing his corsett, poofy skirt, fishnets, boots, tiara etc. or whatever. Girls started to hang out there hoping to catch his attention if they dressed like him and what not. So at least pay tribute to mona, and like some body else said, X-Japan. But i still like her. i love her new album (it's some of the few pop i like). Who can't help but get addicted to how the Japanese young people are dressing. although it has been around for quite a while i'd like more people to realize it and not see Japanese people as smart guys in business suits. They're just like us with our fashions and trends and all the different types of people who like different things. So excited i get to see her in concert in like a week. I think i jusst might wear gothikolita. Yes some of the harajuku fashion can be pretty morbid and gothic, but it can be fun and cute too. I like both emmensely! Whatever mood i'm in.

First of all, X-JAPAN split up BEFORE hide (lead singer, and he was actually NOT a singer for X at all, he was the guitarist) died. Harajuku girls are basically the Punk group of the culture, basically gothic, but recently some vibrant colors have been contributed, they want to either look scary, or cute, and most of the time, they are rebels, The girls taht follow gwen stefani everywhere, they're no where near. Hell, George Bush is more harajuku than them. Gwen treats them as accessories--which is totally outrageous. -- Coming from An asian like myself, I am korean, i have family , and cousins who dress harajuku, and they are very cute. This is my theory ok. She ****ing saw the style in some magazine or something like it enough to think it would make her mo money. She then Hired some asian chicks, though she could have done better, dressed them up in some quazi harajuku style and made a some music videos. See she just wants to be included in the style oh not to mention to try and get in good with the japanese , shes wants to sell more of her merchandise in Japan duh, make the connection .

All I can say is that I have grown up listening to Gwen Stefani back in the 90's which I think was the most creative decade for all blooming stars. During the grunge movement (NIRVANA,SOUNDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS, AND PEAR JAM), the band No Doubt among others (311, Sublime, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) brought a new sound, a fusion of sounds, and thanks to them they destroyed this GRUNGE MONSTER!!!!! Sure she may have evolved from punk-ska (The "IT" sound of 1993-1997) to Pop-Rock and to whatever she is considered now, but had she not introduced her music while these suicidal so-called rock star/morons like Kurt Cobain existed our society, and our children people our children, would become today's mediocre classless society. I myself was saved from Grunge Rock and I am today a Self-Employed Professional Photographer earning twice as much as my NYU college professor. Thank You Mrs. Gwen Stefani-Rossdale.
