We're number 65!!

March 22, 2005 at 07:35 AM

With my bracked screwed beyond all hope of respectability and Texas one and done in March Madness, I thought I would post some college sports notes that conveniently mock my good friends at Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Aggies proud to be in the NIT

NIT TAMU shirt

Yeah, yeah. We lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but at least we were in the damn thing.

The Aggies appear to be quite proud of themselves just for making the NIT, which for those of you who don't follow college basketball is the tournament for the teams who weren't one of the 64 good enough to get into the real thing. They don't even play most of the games at a neutral site, the higher seed gets to host them up until the final four (note the lower case spelling.) I'd like to link to it, but none of the sports websites deem it important enough to actually make a page for it.

We're number 65! We're number 65! We're number 65!

You're a stepping stone, not a destination

A&M head coach Billy Gillespie (who coached at New Braunfels Canyon for two years in the late 80's before moving on to schools where your center wasn't a 6'2" white kid) has admittedly done an excellent job with the Aggies this season. He's at least made them respectable. They went from winless in the Big XII last year to the pinnacle of college basketball the NIT this year. A&M fans couldn't be happier with him and honestly think he's going to lead them to the promise land.

I hope Aggie fans know that if he keeps winning, he won't be there long. The Texas A&M job is not a place hot up and coming basketball coaches stick around for long. And look at his track record, he's even worse than Dennis Franchione about moving around. He's never been anywhere longer than three years. Three at Baylor and three at Tulsa. Two each at Illinois and UTEP. If he has another good season next year I can definitely see him jumping at an offer from an SEC or ACC school and moving on again.

I'm guessing you'll need a new basketball coach for the 2006-2007 season and a new football coach the following year.

Tech - UT Weekend

Since we're talking about t-shirts here, I saw someone the other week at IHOP with a Tech - UT Weekend shirt on. There's no such thing as Tech - UT Weekend. You can't just make up weekends. It helps to be an actual rivaly, and it's got to be a two-sided thing. And lastly it should be an actual weekend, not just a Saturday in October. It's called Texas - OU weekend because it's a neutral road trip for both teams that last three or four days.

Maybe Tech and the Aggies can make a weekend. They can have it in Gordon Wood Stadium in conjunction with the Brownwood Reunion Celebration and Craft Show. Just a suggestion.

Don't you remember when the NIT was a bigger tourney than the NCAA tourney?

I think you mean "We're #66." How dare you slight the play-in winner against UNC. They made it to the big dance. And they have feelings too, whatever that team is...

I guess maybe it should be "We're #71" since they lost to St. Joe's last night.
