Ken Caminiti: 1963 - 2004

Ken Caminiti

Ken Caminiti died yesterday at the age of 41. The cause of death is apparently a heart attack, most likely caused either directly on indirectly by his years of drug abuse. He was in court just last week for violating his probation by testing positive for cocaine.

Unfortunately for Caminiti, his good Major League career will likely be overshadowed by his untimely death and his admission that he used steroids during his career, including during his MVP season of 1996. He was a family favorite when he was playing with the Astros in the early nineties. We weren't his only fans, as people loved the way he played the game.

It's a shame he couldn't keep his life in order, but hopefully his death will serve as a lesson. With all the publicity that Barry Bonds' (alleged) steroid use and Ricky Williams' drug use have gotten lately, there has been very little real repercussions for their actions. Yes there has been a public backlash against them, but Bonds is still out there hitting home runs and I'm sure some team would welcome Williams back. Caminiti's death has hopefully shown young athletes that there are in fact consequences.

Update: Superman also passed on yesterday.
