DirecTV to add 1500 HD channels

September 10, 2004 at 09:18 AM

According to Gizmodo, DirecTV is planning to launch new satellites in order to add 1,500 HD channels by 2007. Two satellites are launching next year and two more in 2007.

No, this doesn't mean I'll have to turn to channel 1244 to watch ESPN6 HD. What it means is that they're actually going to be able to broadcast local channels in HD in whatever market you're in. Cable's ability to give you the local networks in high-def is one of it's big advantages over satellite.

The second set of satellites in 2007 will be used to add more national HD channels as well as other advanced features.

All this is great news, but if there's no HD channels then it doesn't really matter. DirecTV already has a satellite just for HDTV, and how many different channels are there in the HD package? Four. That's right, four.

Grande sucks.
