My preseason college football rankings

August 27, 2004 at 09:04 PM

The college football season getting underway tomorrow (USC vs Va Tech on ESPN) and the College Gameday Preview Special was on tonight so I am more than fired up about it. I'll have something to do for about 10 hours a day the next sixteen Saturdays. I'm sure Christina is fired up about it as well. (Ha!)

In honor of the occasion (and the overhyping of crappy teams like Florida, West Virginia, and Cal), here's the Coaches' poll and the AP Top 25 along with my own:

Pretty good, but where where were my homeboys, Louisville?
We ended up #6. Watch out for us this year, we will be better!

Brian, I agree with some of your pics but you must be on drugs whenever you decided to pick USC as #4, not number 1. Huge mistake--huge!

I'm pretty sure you guys know it, but just wanted to point out that these were my picks from 2004. I'll definitely be doing them again sometime in the next couple of weeks before the first games start.

Grant, I think Ohio State loses to Texas (but boy is that going to be a scary/exciting game), Michigan, and possibly Iowa.

Mark, I think I'll probably end up putting USC 4-ish again this year. I think the losses of Chow and most of their d-line is going to hurt a lot.

I hope you're not a West Virginia grad Bill, because not only did you somehow not notice these are from two years ago but you also think that this is a professional sports website and not a personal weblog. And by the way, your Mountaineers finished out of the top 25 in 2004 so I actually vastly overrated them.

ok for all of you buckeye haters out there i see none of you have done your homework. i will bet any amount of $ that OSU is in the natinal championship this year. forget about TX and USC if you did your homework you would see, even thought its hard to believe but true OSU will not be able to be stopped. our offense is to much. check out our new RB havn't herd to much about him? if you havn't you shouldnt be watching college football. #1 running back in the country. by the end of the year our defense will be dominating and the natinal championship will be coming back to OHIO!!!

Chris Wells was the #1 high school running back last year, he'll be big time soon but I think Pittman remains the starter throughout this year.

Your defense is going to struggle early, you can't lose NINE starters of the caliber of those guys and not expect a huge drop off.

Brain,

I know you are not getting paid for these terrible predictions. WVU is preseason ranked anywhere from #2 through #11 and you have them at #17. They have 49 returning players from last year including all the players at the key positions. Did you see the 2006 Sugar Bowl? How about the look on the faces of the GA Dawgs fans. Priceless. WVU will be in the BCS Bowl picture again.

Jeremy, I know you're not getting paid to know how to read but these rankings are from before the 2004 season. West Virginia didn't finish in the Top 25 that year, so I had them overrated at #17.

The only reason WVU will be in the BCS picture again this season is that the Big East is a joke. Louisville and West Virginia are the only teams in the conference that could even compete for fourth in the Big 12.

boomer sooner! this one is for chris ou will be in the national championship we have adrian peterson and rhett bomar and are defense is very talented with rufus alexander and larry birdine! we have a national championship defense and offense ohio state is going to get beat buy texas again and then ou will beat texas. so osu or texas won't be in it. my prediction ou national champs! oh and another thing your so called #1 running back may be #1 in high school but not in college adrian is! so who ever agrees with me put something about it and brian you're right about louisville and west virginia only being able to compete for fourth in the big 12 if they were in it.
boomer sooner!

Dont overlook the Iowa Hawkeyes this year. They have both of there offensive and defensive lines coming back, plus they have tate and young in the offensive backfield. They have 1 tough game on the road at the big house in Ann Arbor, other than that it looks good. I think they have a really good shot of going to pasadena or possibly tempe!!!! Go Hawks
