Willie's Picnic

July 06, 2004 at 04:48 PM

Overall, Willie's 4th of July Picnic was really fun and something I would recommend to fans of Willie or country music in general. Especially country music fans age 30 or older, as several of the performers are from the 70's and 80's. But I'm not complaining, it was a great mix of young and old artists and all different types of country/rock music.

David Allan Coe

The music itself was great. The only group I had seen live before was Cross Canadian Ragweed, but I was at least familiar with most of the music. David Allan Coe was probably the biggest surprise to me, I really enjoyed him and had no idea how many current rock songs he's been involved with (several of Kid Rock's recent hits for example). The only artists I really didn't care for was Leon Russell (who?) and Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson was outright boring. After 10 hours in the sun, it was tough to put up with his mellow songs that I had never heard of. Plus he tried to make some anti-war comment. Just a note to all celebs, shut the hell up. Because you're on TV or the radio does not mean I want your political opinion. Feel free to vote and support whoever you want, but don't bother to tell me about it.

Kris Kristofferson

The worst part of the whole event was the sun/heat/length. It was absolutely unbearable out there on Sunday. The sun was blaring all day and in order to stay cool you had to purchase $3 bottles of water. They weren't even 20 ounce bottles either, they were those bullshit .5 (16.9 oz) things. I know the people in charge of the event can't do anything about the sun or heat, but you can at least be reasonable about the price of water. Sell soda and beer for as much as you want but give people cheap water. They eventually brought out a giant truck full of tap water, but that wasn't till very late in the afternoon and you had to wade through three inches of mud to get to it.

I would definitely go again, but next time I'll show up much later and only see the artists I'm really excited about.

I hadn't planned on it, I'm too lazy to head all the way down to Austin and back up in one weekend. There are some really good artists though. I haven't seen Pat Green in forever and I've always wanted to see Ben Harper.

Ben is amazing live (particularly at ACL because you can get up against the stage pretty easily)...

You should just suck it up and make the trip! :p
