Roy Williams and the rest of the Lions draft

April 25, 2004 at 04:00 PM

Now that Roy Williams is a member of the Detroit Lions, they automatically become one of my favorite teams. (Any team Ricky Williams, Roy Williams, or Vince Young plays for will be a team I follow and root for.) With the NFL Draft wrapping up I thought I would look at my new team's picks and their team as a whole.

The first day of their draft went well. Getting Roy didn't exactly fill a big need, but he was one of the top couple players in this draft and getting him at pick number 7 is a steal. In my opinion he'll live up to his nickname and be a "Legend". He's got speed, great hands, and his strength is very underrated. Plus he's got a great personality and character. Another steal is getting Va Tech running back Kevin Jones at the very end of the first round. He's a great back and at least the equivalent talent of RB Steven Jackson. Plus, he fills a big need. Teddy Lehman is a shit head Sooner, but he's a pretty good linebacker. Good instincts and speed, but he lacks prototypical NFL size. It'll be interesting to see if the big former Horn Shaun Rogers can keep offensive lineman off him and Boss Bailey.

The second day of the draft is usually a crapshoot. Teams try to address needs and draft the best available guys on their board. The Lions didn't do anything exciting today, drafting a corner, a tackle, and an outside linebacker to try to fill needs. They needed a tight end, but didn't take one and will have to find help at that position from elsewhere.

Overall, an awesome first day and a normal second day. Adding Williams and Jones the Lions will at least be more entertaining to watch, certainly for a Longhorn fan like me.
