In what universe is Barry Manilow a legend?

Another American Idol show tonight, another random ass pseudo-celebrity guest host. They repeatedly called Barry Manilow a legend and a superstar, and as the night went on I realized I only know a single song of his. I know his name very well, I think everyone does. But what has he done, at least in the last 30 years? The only song I know at all is Mandy, but the only reason I know it is because of Can't Hardly Wait. Was he really ever that popular?
