Austin company sues over JPEG patent

April 28, 2004 at 09:43 AM

An Austin company is suing just for shits and giggles over their supposed owning a patent over an algorithm used in the JPEG image format. It seems the company has no real plans or products, just a plan to sue the pants off everyone. The company has actually scared enough people into handing over $90 million (including $16 mil from Sony.) It's the same idea that SCO used to sue company's based on their Linux "patent". Maybe I should work for them, but I imagine they are only looking to employ lawyers. (JK, they are a real company with real software, just seems like a way to piss people off to make a few million bucks.) Read the Wired News story.
