There hasn’t been a lot of good news for college football fans the last few weeks as the 2020 season teeters on the brink of postponement, but for Texas fans Friday was a fantastic day. The #1 QB and #1 overall recruit for the 2022 class QB Quinn Ewers committed to play for the Longhorns.
Ewers is just starting his junior year at Southlake Carroll, but recruiting services are already calling him the best QB prospect as Trevor Lawrence and if he makes it to campus in Austin still ranked #1 will be the highest rated recruit signed by the Longhorns since some guy named Vincent Young. Definitely an exciting day for Texas fans.
Texas has now signed/received commitments from the top quarterbacks in the state of Texas in the the 2020, 2021, and 2022 classes so adding Ewers will create a stacked QB room. As the 5+ years between Colt McCoy and Shane Buechele/Sam Ehlinger show, you never know how even highly recruited QBs will perform once 100,000 fans are screaming at them. But having Hudson Card, Ja’Quinden Jackson, Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers you certainly have pretty darn good odds at least one of those talented players can run your team.
With the talent, hype, and ranking Ewers brings with him to the Horns, there’s good chance that other 2021 and 2022 blue chippers sign up for the chance to play with him. If that happens, this could be a day we look back on that set Texas and coach Tom Herman up for being a true Big 12 and playoff contended for years to come. Now we just have to keep him in the fold for two long years before he likely finally enrolls in January 2022.
