D.J. Augustin declares for NBA Draft

April 23, 2008 at 04:10 PM

Texas point guard D.J. Augustin has declared for the NBA Draft and will leave school after his sophomore season. Not a huge surprise. He hasn't hired an agent yet, but unless he gets hurt in workouts in the next six weeks I don't see him coming back next season. Good luck DJ.

Kevin Durant to the Seattle Supersonics… maybe

May 25, 2007 at 10:07 PM

The NBA Draft lottery was held tonight and the Portland Trailblazers won the right to take the first overall pick. That means the Texas' Kevin Durant is likely headed to Seattle who holds the number two pick. Tough break for KD as he'd have been an instant national superstar if he'd been drafted by Boston.

UT, A&M respond to supplement charges

May 10, 2005 at 08:08 AM

Sounds like a sportswriter is trying to make a name for himself by reporting that Texas and A&M gave it's players power bars and caffeine. Alert the FBI!

Here's the full story (because site registration is BS):

After a newspaper reported that the two schools had bought nearly $120,000 of dietary supplements containing banned substances, the University of Texas said Monday that it had done nothing wrong and Texas A&M University promised to investigate and notify the NCAA.

I'm not concerned about any of it, DeLoss Dodds, UT's men's athletic director, said of Sunday's article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In a prepared statement, Dodds added, The NCAA has advised us that this is not an NCAA reporting issue.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M will investigate and report itself to the NCAA for a secondary violation, said David Batson, A&M's director of athletic compliance.

According to the Star-Telegram report citing athletic department purchasing records, Texas A&M has spent nearly $30,000 on supplements that were banned by the NCAA in 2000 and Texas has bought $90,000 worth. Much of that money was used for drinks and energy bars that contain amino acids.

Amino acids may be the building blocks of life, but they do not appear to fit the NCAA's guidelines that schools may provide only non-muscle-building supplements in four classes: carbohydrate/electrolyte drinks, energy bars, carbohydrate boosters and vitamins and minerals. Under the rules, supplements also must have a protein content of less than 30 percent.

According to the Star-Telegram report, UT trainers spent nearly $49,000 on Promax energy bars and $29,500 on Metabolol II recovery drink, both of which contain added amino acids. UT also paid $282 for four cases of Jacked, an energy drink that contains caffeine, according to records cited by the newspaper.

Texas A&M, the newspaper reported, had bought eight products that contain banned muscle-building substances. The university's trainers also bought the appetite suppressant MNS Gold, which contains synephrine, a substance similar to ephedra.

Tina Bonci, co-director of athletics training/sports medicine at UT, said in a statement released by the university Monday that UT officials had received the NCAA's blessing years ago.

In 2000, we provided the NCAA a list of all products we were considering to distribute pursuant to the legislation, including the products in question, containing amino acids, Bonci said. The NCAA interpretation, based on the information they had at the time, stated that it was permissible to purchase and distribute those products to student-athletes.

UT officials said the supplements were safe and not harmful to athletes.

More than five years ago the NCAA became concerned about creatine and other controversial muscle builders that were being distributed widely by some schools. The 2000 rule, however, became more aimed at not allowing bigger and richer schools to gain a competitive advantage by distributing supplements, even ones that are presumed to be safe.

Batson said that, from the standpoint of complying with NCAA rules, the supplement issue had been flying beneath everyone's radar.

I hadn't heard any talk about it at all, Batson said. Most people provide the power bars or the energy bars. Nobody thought there's any concern.

One of the few such cases involved Virginia Tech, which last year admitted to a secondary violation of NCAA rules because its strength coach had arranged for players to buy creatine at a discount. The penalty in that case was minor.

Basically, what we've been told is just don't let it happen again, David Chambers, Virginia Tech's senior associate director of athletics for external affair, told the Roanoke Times & World News in November.

Blog Maverick is a great site for open and honest discussion from a person you wouldn't normally be able to get that from. How many billionaire, CEO, NBA owners have a weblog where they come and talk so frankly about sports, technology, and world events?

His sports posts can sometimes be a little long and whiny, but almost every single post on technology is well-written and spot on. I definitely have a lot more respect for Cuban after reading his thoughts on things. He's really an intelligent and likable guy.

March 22, 2005 at 02:01 PM

Barry Bonds reportedly may miss the entire season because of his knee injury. Maybe this is some sort of hush, hush steroid suspension? Jason Giambi missed almost all of last year, now this. Intersting.

Nice quote to point out why no one likes Bonds and wants him to go down:

You wanted me to jump off the bridge, I finally have jumped. You wanted to bring me down, you've finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it. From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person. I'm done. Do the best I can, that's about it.

NFL Wonderlic Test Scores

March 07, 2005 at 09:11 AM

Look at Hangartner representing New Braunfels well. Kicked pretty much everyone's ass on the thing. Other thoughts from the combine results...

  • Frank Gore is a moron.
  • Damn OU lost a lot of players this year.
  • Fabian Washington is a fast SOB, too bad he can't cover anybody.
  • I sure would take a chance on Bo Scaife in round 7, if it weren't for his knees he'd go in the first three rounds.

Update: Here's some more information about the test the NFL administers, and here's some sample questions (PDF). Learning disability or not, a score of 6 is next to impossible for someone who is supposed to have a college education.

Rick Barnes leaving for UVA??

March 03, 2005 at 08:44 AM

There's been a lot of rumors over on Orangebloods about Rick Barnes' future at Texas in the last couple of days. Frustrations about the lack of commitment to the program from the athletic department and the desire to be back home in the ACC are possible reasons.

Personally I hope the rumors are just that, I think Barnes has started something special at Texas and would like to see him finish it. Maybe he's just leveraging leaving to get DeLoss Dodds to final make the changes to the Erwin Center seating and get the rowdy student section closer to the action.

Best WNBA comment ever

February 18, 2005 at 03:33 PM

The ESPN.com Page 2 mailbag includes the best WNBA comment ever:

I came up with a fullproof idea for disproving that the WNBA is a real sport. You choose a person from a city that has a WNBA team and ask them the following question, Would you rather your WNBA team win the championship or be walking along and find a $5 bill on the ground. So far I haven't found anyone that will choose the championship.

Also includes the following non-sports related observation:

The OC's biggest mistake was the way they raced through plots and relied too heavily on the tune in next week! factor, which is a pretty dangerous way to go -- we weren't even midway through the second season when they were playing the lesbian card. At the rate they're going, by Season 4, we'll see Ryan kidnapped by a UFO or something.

Turns out that Michigan's starting defensive end is a serial flasher that Ann Arbor Police have been looking for since the summer.

Update: Yikes, it's actually much worse than the first article. I've updated the link to a new article stating that he was doing a lot more than just exposing himself.

NCAA seeks to rule on M. Williams quickly

December 02, 2004 at 10:45 AM

The NCAA might be in big trouble by now. I haven't seen any news about it but Texas' Mike Williams (no relation to the other Mike Williamses.) was supposed to have a hearing this morning with the University to decide whether or not he should be eligible. The NCAA has been dragging their feet and dragging Williams through the mud with no proof and no hurry.

Hopefully this will be resolved with the kid's best interest in mind.

Eli Manning to start for NY Giants

November 15, 2004 at 07:03 PM

Eli Manning has been named the starting QB for the New York Giants this week. I'm not sure why, if the offensive line could protect Kurt Warner at all he would be having a pretty decent season. All I care about is how this affect my fantasy team. Will they give Tiki Barber the ball more? Will teams gang up to stop the run and force the rookie to beat them. Damnit there are fantasy playoffs to consider here!

QB attempts 101 passes

November 05, 2004 at 08:40 AM

Jesus, that's a lot of pass attempts in one game, the previous record was 92 attempts. I wonder how many times they ran the ball.

Lensch completed 56 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns, with three interceptions, and remarkably was not sacked. He is averaging 59 attempts and 308 yards passing this season for Dana College, a 500-student NAIA school in Blair, Neb.

To put that in perspective, Texas quarterback Vince Young has attempted 143 passes all season!

I won’t say what i really think about the genius that started the season on election day since it’s probably the same person that started the season on Halloween in previous years. There’s only a presidential election 1x every 4 years. We start on that day..Genius. Let’s see, which are going to get more highlights and press coverage Nov 3rd. The kickoff of the NBA season or the election. The NBA has a great idea to feature “Premiere Week” and we start it on Election Night. Brilliant.

Astros want Biggio back

October 28, 2004 at 07:18 PM

The Astros have picked up Craig Biggio's $3 million option for next season, and I can't say I'm overly happy about it. Biggio is still a serviceable hitter, but runs and throws like a girl so he's a liablity in the outfield. I'd like to finally give Jason Lane a shot out there.

Nothing else matters though unless they manage to resign Carlos Beltran, and I have my doubts about that.

Orangebloods.com is the Texas Longhorns branch of the Rivals.com network.

For the most part a great site, the articles and news stories are definitely worth the subscription price. Great writing and great information on the Longhorns current team and on recruiting in a very timely manner. The message boards are active and for the most part the posters are intelligent and sane.

It's not cheap ($7 - $10 per month) so I've considered cancelling several times, but I'm always drawn back in by something. There's really no down time anymore, there's always recruiting info and the coverage of the football, basketball, and baseball team is usually lightyears better than any other source.

Vince Young named SI.com Player of the Week

In SI's Weekend Review they have named Vince Young the player of the week.

It's nice to see him getting some positive press after the beat downs he took in the media (and on this site) about his play the last two weeks. He looked more comfortable and more like the quarterback we were all expecting to see this season.

I particularly liked the photo, it looks like he's giving the Hook 'Em Horns signal and saying "Up yours" at the same time.

Braves lose it

October 12, 2004 at 08:28 AM
Braves players upset over the loss

Braves won their division again, but it just set them up for another postseason disappointment. Something I never realized:

The Braves' first season in Turner Field was 1997, and in seven of their eight years in "The Ted" the Braves have been eliminated from the postseason at home. The lone exception was 1999, when the Braves were swept in the World Series by the Yankees, and Game 4 was played in New York.

Reebok Classic Pump Bringback

Bonds introduced Sheffield to BALCO

October 05, 2004 at 01:35 PM

I really hope Barry Bonds blows out his knee mowing the lawn or something this offseason. There is no way I want this man passing Hank Aaron or even Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list.

I am getting more and more convinced that Bonds is/was on steroids, and this story from ESPN seems to be in line with that theory. Gary Sheffield reportedly told a grand jury that Bonds introduced him to BALCO and that he unknowingly used a topical steroid. Sheffield also calls Bonds an a-hole repeatedly:

The breaking point occurred, Sheffield told SI, one morning when Bonds left for their workout without him, leaving Sheffield to find his own ride to the gym. When Sheffield arrived, he found Bonds laughing at him with someone he later learned was a writer for Men's Journal.

What a class act.
