Colton Pitonyak

Former University of Texas student Colton Pitonyak was convicted Tuesday of the murder of Jennifer Cave and sentenced to 55 years in jail. Despite shooting, mutilating, and dismembering Cave's body and then attempting to run to Mexico with his accomplice, Pitonyak and his attorneys tried to claim the murder was an accident.

Shockingly, Pitonyak will only have to serve about 20 years before becoming eligible for parole. The fact that he could be walking the streets some day as a free man isn't right. I don't care how drunk or stoned he was at the time he killed someone who was once his friend, he committed a heinous crime and deserves much stronger punishment.

It's good that he was convicted and will pay for his crime, but Pitonyak deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail.

My heart goes out to the victim and her family and also goes out to Colton and his family. I have two boys and I know the pain when you try hard every day when they are young to teach them all the right things but there is no guarentee how their future falls. I know he did wrong and needed help with his addiction and anger but I also believe he didn't expect this to happen and certainly did not plan for this to happen. He is someone who can learn from this and help others. He is too smart to let this knowledge just waste away in prison. I believe there is a reason for his existence and though he has to pay the consequences of his crime, he is still someone I know who is good and I will continue to pray for him as well as Jennifer.
