Review: The Ladykillers

The Ladykillers starring Tom Hanks

The Ladykillers is a movie that confused and intrigued me from the very first preview I saw. I wanted to see it when it came out in theaters, but not so bad that I ever actually got around to it.

Considering I didn't really know what to expect out of the movie, it actually turned out to be exactly what I expected. What the hell does that mean? It means the movie itself is just as confusing as the previews make it out to be and the story still has holes in it even when the movie is over.

Rating: 2.5/5

The movie itself was entertaining, but overall was just lacking something. Tom Hanks was definitely himself, appropriately overacting the part of Colonel Sanders clone, Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr. The rest of the cast was decent, but unspectacular. Ryan Hurst (from Remember the Titans) was in an absolutely horrible role. I don't think it was his “acting” that was the problem, but the character just had nothing to it. I know he was supposed to be all brawns no brains, but it was just a little too over the top.

If you like other movies by Ethan and Joel Cohen, you'll probably enjoy The Ladykillers. However, it's clearly not their best work and Tom Hanks too has had better days.

I don't understand the title of the movie. Is it because they were trying to kill the old lady....if so, then the title is dumb.

The title is ironic because they're so inept at killing the old lady and their general failings as criminals.
