Review: Jersey Girl

September 29, 2004 at 11:14 AM
Jersey Girl starring Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler

The first thing you should know about Jersey Girl is that it was written and directed by Kevin Smith. Okay, now forget I ever told you that.

If you go into this movie expecting a classic Kevin Smith film such as Mallrats and Chasing Amy, you are going to be immensely disappointed. Jersey Girl is a good movie, but it's not a good Kevin Smith movie.

The movie has a cute (see, not exactly a word you would use to describe any of Smith's other movies) storyline and well-developed characters. The dialogue is interesting and avoids being corny. Even Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler manage not to screw this thing up. Although I don't think I've found Tyler attractive in anything other than Armageddon, she just looks too much like some disturbing combination of her father and a horse.

Rating: 3/5

The best part of Jersey Girl (other than J-Lo only being in the first five minutes), is the supporting cast. The little girl is cute but not too annoying. But come on, who names a damn kid Gertrude? And calling her Gertie, that's even worse! George Carlin is great as Ben's father. Stephen Root (of Office Space fame) is always good for comic relief as one of Carlin's moron friends. Excellent casting there.

Overall, it's a good but not great movie. It'll be a damn shame however if this is the kind of thing Kevin Smith continues to come out with. Jersey Girl is worth seeing, but see Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back first if you haven't already.
